Serbia explores nuclear energy, faces challenges

Nuclear power experts told Biznis.rs that the study highlights nuclear energy as a long-term, resource-intensive state project, requiring legal, institutional, educational, and financial preparation. Criticism of the project is focused on the study’s limited consideration of alternatives, such as renewables, energy storage, and efficiency measures, and on assumptions that nuclear energy is almost necessary to replace coal. Serbia relies heavily on coal powered plants for electricity and the government has set de-carbonization goals which have to be met by 2050.
